INTERVIEW: JBiz
Posted by DJ Sabby on September 28th, 2011
Jbiz

It’s been a while and finally I got a hold of him. His new and a budding rapper in the world of Hip Hop and currently he is based in the United States of America.

Jonathan Russell a.k.a , J Biz, is an eclectic, high energy, “feel good” musical rhyming talent, who has recorded some of the most incredible show stopping songs for the hip hop genre. Born in Bronx, New York and raised in Plainfield, New Jersey, his journey began with a love for writing lyrics that paralleled both his and his friends’ experiences in life. He draws his inspiration from energy and a love for people and the hardships to triumphs we all live.

Jonathan was once quoted as stating, “im trying to put out music that not only benefits to my self content but also places joy, emotion and inspiration in the hearts of the listeners.”

____________

Whats up J.BIZ?

My spirit and energy’s up. Besides that everythings cool. Thanks for the opportunity. Pleasure to do this interview with you.

The name JBiz, how did it come about?

That’s a good question. The name honestly came about through my aunt, who was always calling me jb….not sure why lol…but one day hearing it and putting the J.BIZ fully to it… it changed my perspective and honestly inspired me to live up to the name and make it powerful. Make it mean something! J.Biz

Let’s talk you and life in the Bronx and moving to Plainfield, New Jersey?

My life in the Bronx, NYC was shorter experienced because I moved from there at an early age to Plainfield New Jersey. This was quite a switch because the Bronx NYC is such a different environment, but because my roots are throughout many different places, I embrace them and share them in my music. The Bronx NYC is like a mecca to hip hop so I am proud to know I started from there n continue to represent everywhere i go. BX salute! Jerz up all day!

When did you start doing music?

I started doing music in about 1998. As the years progressed, so did my delivery, style, content and ambition. I soon learned how to write full songs and channel my thoughts and feelings into music.

Do you still remember the first record that you recorded and what inspired it?

Yes I actually do.lol throwbaaaack! It was called “Anything”. I remember it was a sample from the older Broadway play “Annie get your gun”. The saying “anything you can do I can do better” stuck out to me. So I got it sampled, added some wordplay and lyrics to it and made it a pretty dope 1st song.

You have recorded 3 E.P’s and the most recent release being Goals Wins and Victories (G.W.AV.) What has been the goal with your music thus far?

To keep evolving, keep contributing to making good music. Keep giving people what they deserve-Quality.

What drives your music career?

My family, My vision, My dedication and my dreams.

Looking at the hip hop scene right now, internationally which sound is making love to your ears?

Honestly, there’s no sound in particular to me. I am just loving the evolution of music. It’s almost everyday you see new boundaries being broken and that’s awesome. So I’m experiencing love at first, sound more and more these days.

Still on the hip hop topic, Nigerian star-D’banj just inked a deal with Good Music headed by Kanye West. Who have you heard from Africa and you wouldn’t mind working with?

I read about his deal and def hats off to him and hope he goes very far with it. I like the music that im hearing out of South Africa. There’s much life, content, and soul inside of it. I got a chance to hear the music of JR. He made this record “So Hot” feat Tee Pee that was pretty fly. I also came across an artist named JOZI. there’s a sound he has called motherland krunk. I love seeing people make their own sounds so im checking his music out too. I would like to get deeper into the music scene of Africa but im working on making that possible.

When you look at guys like Young Money who are currently running the Hip Hop scene and this is proof with their positioning on charts. Whats your take on their music?

My take on young moneys music is pretty simple. Im not really a fan of Young Money’s music but I tip my hat off to their grind, hustle and accomplishments. I like the foundation they have amongst each other. That may not be what I listen to it but I see what their doing. And the fact that many others can see it as well is what matters. Much continued progress to them.

Ayt, cool – we met on twitter if I am not mistaken. How has the social network scene helped you musically?

Yes we def did. It’s been a pleasure. I see social networks as a big help in my career. I embrace what the social networks have to offer because each network is a platform to socialize with individuals and possibly future supporters of your music. It gives you a way to really see your music’s impact as well as who identifies with it.

Future plans from J.Biz?

More Goals, More Wins and More Victories

See you when you are in South Africa or when I land that side?

ABSOLUTELY. The motherland is calling me. I can’t wait to be there. and whenever you heading out to the east coast in the states…ESPECIALLY NEW YORK CITY/NEW JERSEY!!! ..MAKE SURE U CALL ME. ME AND THE TEAM GOT YOU! SALUTE!!!

No problem JBiz will be hitting you up soon man, check out one of his songz below and feel free to comment on the interview.

GHETTO DREAMS OR OTIS?....LEAVE UR THOUGHTS

This is a pretty big time in my world of music. Of course, there is the barrage of mayhem regarding Jay-Z and Kanye West teaming up for the "Watch The Throne" album but!!!!!! Lets not forget(as well as enlighten some) that Nas and Common have just made a helluva team up together for Commons' project...."The Dreamer,The Believer". Now as many fans are probably hacking each others pages, cursing each other out and all kind of proactive shit(lol),i just like seeing big moves for hip hop.

I gotta be honest VIDEO WISE AND SONG WISE....IM DIGGING THE NEW NAS AND COMMON TRACK-GHETTO DREAMS....

SONG WISE

OTIS-its a dope track
GHETTO DREAMS-Its a dope track 2....but i fuckz wit it more

VIDEO WISE

OTIS---shit was very very very clear, crisp and captured emotions of hov and jay very well. Actually captured the whole feel of them in their verses/lyrics. Also the hand and car sparks effect was just pretty fuckin cool.

GHETTO DREAMS- Nas and Common were barely in the video(or in most mens eyes lol). Ms Bria Myles did a spectacular job just being a beautiful black woman on camera. Nas and Common on the otherhand, delivered good music that matched the videos concept pretty well. I will say this video caught me as very simple but still gave a quality depiction of gritty/struggle meeting strength and beauty. Thumbs up.

OVERALL...I BEEN A NAS FAN 4EVA....AND BOUGHT COMMONS LAST 2 ALBUMS.....SO YALL KNOW WHAT IM BACKING 420%....

HAPPY CANADA DAY AKA CANNABIS DAY

2 ALL MY CANADIAN HOMIES AND FAM...MUCH LOVE AND THANKS 4 BEING REALLY COOL AND HUMAN LIKE PEOPLE....I APPRECIATE YALL AND WISH U A HAPPY CANADA AKA CANNABIS DAY.

PLANKING OR PLAYING OURSELVES

PLANKING? ? ?

u see it...i see it....everyones seen it...ive seen a whoooole lot of this new craze called-"planking". Being that the rules r
basically look like a moron in odd places and take a pic for the internet....im guessing its a new age game..not much thought to it....WHATEVA THO...
Possibly, this could just be a harmless game thats intention is fun....but i honestly dont think ive sipped enuff alc to wanna go planking......but i be blazed often...n no planking thoughts 4 this dude...n trust me...i got a helluva imagination

ON THE FLIPSIDE....
you can do your own research and notice that the act and positioning in the game "PLANKING" has been strongly affiliated with the times of slavery. On the ships africans were placed in very similar positions chained from foot to hand so that they could provide more space on the slave ships....i wont even go into how disgusting of a thought this was...especially from another human to do to another human...
:::blanks moment out to focus:::
well with that being said...im not sure how u feel...but...ive seen lotta mixed feelings on this n i felt why not speak on it as well....

Do we pass a blind eye and let this term/act be forgotten as one meaning and reborn as another......or do we still remind ourselves that our past was still reality....hmmm

I RARELY SEE THIS TYPE OF PRESENCE AT ANY OTHER MUSIC FESTIVALS/GATHERINGS....UNLESS ITS GOT TOO MUCH OF SOMETHING.....THE COLOR BLACK.....smh.

BELIEVE IT THOUGH....THE PEOPLE I BELIEVE ARE BEGINNING TO COME TOGETHER WITHOUT RACE/COLOR BEING OF IMPORTANCE....ITS JUST SAD THE AUTHORITY/POLICE IN THIS COUNTRY ARE STILL IN 1956......STAY STRONG PEOPLE..ITS ABOUT THE "PEOPLE" AT THE END OF THE DAY..

statement from Legendary GENERAL STEELE of smif n wessun....

“You can witness it was jam packed, there was no fights, no confrontations. There was all kinds of people in there, from all over the place. There was music in there, it was going off, it was poppin’. Then the police came and stormed the place, telling us we had to get out. And then they started beating on people, telling us to move away. This is what goes on in New York City. New Yorkers get frustrated when the police come in and, instead of bringing order, they create more chaos. This is what NYPD does. They create more chaos, because they don’t identify with the people… These motherfuckers is the overseers of this land right here. We witnessing it right now. I guess they bored. They can’t find no rapists, killers and criminals, so they wanna fuck up the common folk, the party-goers, the hip-hoppers, the current revolutionaries of this time. Long live hip-hop, long live free speech, long live you guys out there.”--via www.beatknowledge.org/youtube

interesting outlooks.....JAY-Z "DECODED" looks at critics

IN Jay-Z’s autobiography, “Decoded” and among the various pieces of insight, there is one that is applicable to my sentiment. He writes, “Magazines, even hip-hop magazines, would reduce a song to a rating, a number of mics or stars or some other system. But I always wondered how they could try to pin down and attach a rating to music that was really helping people understand their own lives.”

GOVERNMENT HYPOCRISY....DUHH WINNING....

im confused if cannabis is a schedule 1 drug(which means drug has no medicinal value at all).....why would the GOVERNMENT contradict themselves and patent the very structure and chemical make up that they have banned, outlawed and restricted....FOR MEDICAL VALUE.....smh..."light em n enlighten em"..L.G.I.T.

(copy n paste 4 whole article........if u give a fuck.....lol.)

SOMETHING I WAS READING........

But what these neophytes haven’t realized is that ratings perpetuate a duality of political incorrectness – one: fans need to be told what to listen to; two: critics believe that fans of music are not capable of coming to their own conclusions. Add to that, publications that utilize the rating system are feeding the wild fire that is today’s ADHD culture, which seeks quick information (and by quick, we’re talking about 140 characters), whether or not the information is correct.

RANDOM GOOD ADVICE

1 UUUUP YALL
i try to always leave some of my thoughts/reads laying around...check out some of these good words of advice to tomorrows artist...PEACE...L.G.I.T.

Zilla Rocca: Gems from the International Dart Parlour

Zilla Rocca was speaking some truth yesterday and I had to republish it here on Audible Hype. Zilla has been through everything we cover here: booking tours, starting labels, record deals, building scenes, artist management, branding and marketing…yup. So think his testimony here is probably the most important stuff I’ll be posting this year. I won’t steal his thunder with a synopsis, I’ll just let him speak…
The Testimony of Zilla Rocca

For the first time in about 6 years, I feel just…content and happy with my music “career.” I spent a good portion of ‘06-‘10 worrying about what I WASN’T doing and what needed to be done NEXT. Didn’t enjoy anything in the present. As a DIY artist, I’d read all these articles and stories and interviews which just made me feel like I was behind the curve and unproductive. Now I just focus on making stuff I enjoy ONLY. Eff sales, hits, views, cosigns, placements, etc. The most successful artists still suffer.

It feels good to just create. Artists aren’t supposed to be accountants, PR, webmasters, promoters, etc. We get told that artist X did ALL of these things and they made it. But do those folks even enjoy it anymore or are they punching a clock? I’m OK w/ working a dayjob while moonlighting as an emcee/proudcer. It makes me feel like a superhero.

Artists who are 100% driven to make it often become unbalanced as people, and end up melting down and freaking out anyway. Bill Withers didn’t get on until he was 30 something years old. Watch “Still Bill” …he leads a normal fulfilling life.

So yeah…thanks to all the folks who’ve worked with me or reached out the past year. You’ve helped me love music rather than just “pursue” it.
1. Age Means Nothing

Here’s a list of rappers who didn’t break through until they were 27 or older: Kanye West, Eminem, 50 Cent, Jay-Z, Yelawolf, Jay Electronica, Curren$y, Danny Brown, Tech N9NE, or arguably some of the best in the business right now. The old saying is that “rap is a young man’s game”. Bullshit. There are no great rappers under 28 right now. Guys like Rakim, Nas, and the Wu getting on at 16, 18, 20 years old—that’s never going to happen again. They are geniuses, which means they were more advanced than anyone. It was a different world, rap was younger, etc. They were always going to land on their feet. In all likelihood, you are not going to get on while you are “young”. Don’t feel like it’s time to hang it up because you have student loans, a 401K, and an overdue cable bill. Like any other craft, you get better with rap the more time you put into it. Writers get better with age, as do musicians. The only older folks who fall off are the ones who don’t accept change or stay frozen in time. Bun B literally has grandchildren and is on every new album that comes out. Don’t treat adulthood like it’s hip hop poison.
2. It’s Good to Keep Learning, It’s Better to Keep Practicing

For every Plan of Success you read about it, there’s another article that dispels it. “Start a Reverbnation Page” “Studies Show Fans Hate Reverbnation”. “Sign a 360 Deal” “All Artists Regret Signing 360 Deals”. “Put all of your money into merch” “Recession has hit the music industry the hardest”. Whatever you want to do, just make sure you MAXIMIZE your strategy. You’ll be discouraged the more think tank pieces you read because those are written by people who are doing THEIR strategy to the fullest. Good for them. Lady Gaga purposely saturates all media to be successful. Adele takes the exact opposite approach; she hates oversaturation. Her album is #1 all over the world. Whatever marketing or promo pitch you come up with, stick to it and push it fully. If you like Facebook over twitter, direct everyone to your FB fan page. Fuck Twitter. If you hate FB and love pics of nude indie girls, direct everyone to your Tumblr. Fuck Facebook. You like email blasts, fuck blogging. Be disciplined — that’s the hardest part. The old sales proverb is that a sale isn’t made on the 1st call; it’s made on the 8th or 9th call. I used to do cold calls and that shit is true. Whatever your plan is, it will take time. But if you invest in that 1 idea and stay disciplined to it, it will pay off.
3. Don’t Get Caught Up in the Numbers

This is really hard because the internet attaches numbers to everything, as if that solely determines real world value. There are rappers with 1,000 YouTube views who are signed to a major right now. There are rappers with 50,000 YouTube views who will never get signed. There are guys selling out CDs, vinyls, and t-shirts who you’ve never heard of. There are blog rappers that saturate the internet with videos, cosigns, and mixtapes and can’t perform for more than 10 minutes live. It’s all an illusion. The best stuff has almost never sold the most. Don’t assign value to the hits, views, friends, followers, etc. Assign value to your work, then others will do the same. If you present garbage and gimmicks, what do you think is coming back?
4. The Company You Keep is Everything

If you’re an artsy daydreamer, be around other artsy daydreamers. If you love the radio and money, be around rich fools who love Hot 97. There’s nothing wrong with either group. But there’s a reason why Anticon doesn’t exist to Lyor Cohen. Anticon’s motive is to put out progressive weirdo next level shit. Lyor Cohen’s motive is to own 3 summer houses (read the Big Payback for more on Lyor; he’s a ruthless titan). A guy running a strip club probably wouldn’t partner on a new venture with someone running a AIDS awareness non-profit. Their motives and philosophies just clash. Don’t waste your time with people whose motives clash with yours. Be cordial and polite, but don’t be fooled. You are not alike and you probably never will be alike. By spending time around likeminded people who are inspired and motivated by the same things as you, the stress and workload lessens. You speak the same language. This is important.
5. Don’t Define Yourself Solely Through Music

Take a trip. Go see a movie. Date a librarian. Watch sports. Become a wine afficianado. Volunteer somehwere. Do something besides “living in the studio”, “making beats for days”, and “grinding out here EVERYDAY!”. For a long time, rappers and producers weren’t hustlers. They just worked when it was time to work and their music reflected their influences outside of music: religion, philosophy, social issues, racial strife, films, etc. This is a relatively new honor badge that folks proudly display, the 24/7 Grind Master. And the folks who “grind the most” make the least interesting shit because they aren’t experiecing anything outside of the hustle.

I’m not saying don’t work hard, I’m saying balance out your life. Hip hop isn’t EVERYTHING. You aren’t “being hip hop” when you spend time with your sick grandmother or reading a book about Gandhi or sitting on a parkbench watching kids run around. You’re just being a person. There’s other parts to your identity besides two turntables and a mic. Like Mos Def said, hip hop will do whatever you say it can do but it won’t save you. If you’re an egotist with commitment issues, putting out 3 EPs and performing for 6 months straight isn’t going to fix that. You’ll be an even bigger egotist with commitment issues because you spent 6 months in a distraction.

You’re not losing out on your career if you take a breather; you’re extending it. We’re all fighting for relevancy and attention, but sacrificing your homelife and your real life relationships for 7 extra blog posts or 2 more shows or 10 more CD’s sold doesn’t fill that void. It widens the void, so once you do achieve your goal, after 3 months, you start thinking “Damn…so….what’s next?” You can’t even enjoy the milestone because you’re so used to working towards the NEXT thing instead of relishing in what’s happening RIGHT NOW. If you think a big tour and a record deal is going to make you happy, you’re wrong. Because once the tour is over and your deal falls through, you’re back to where you were. It’s a passing satisfaction. It’s not a lasting satisfaction.

So please, if you forget everything I’ve written thus far, just remember that being a whiny selfish douchebag might land you a couple big singles, but your life, and the lives of those around you, will be affected by that poisonous attitude long after your last mic check. Working on yourself as a person is more important than working on your freestyle or your loop chops. You’ll be just “a person” a lot longer than you will be an acclaimed hip hop artist. And that comes from stability, self-awareness, self-reflection, a balanced lifestyle and wise decisions. Something that is imbalanced always falls over, the same way ice cream is great but if you eat ice cream for three meals a day, you get sick. There will always be another show, another album, another video. There’s only one you. Which is more important?

COMFORT ZONES

i often have heard...."you gotta step out of your comfort zone". i even liked vanessa williams song" the comfort zone". plus how can u not be comfortable with vanessa williams singing to u.:::digressing::::::

ANYWAYS...these terms and related thoughts on the term brought me to a different outlook that i want to share with you. i believe that it is important for all of us to understand what "our comfort zone" is and expand it. who ever said the comfort zone doesnt go thru re construction every now and then. This thought stems from the fact that much of the "comfort zones" that we live in are places in our mind that seem most comforting to us. most familiar. least conflicting.
Yet from birth we had to develop some sort of a beginning and foundation to this place of peace known as "the comfort zone". i wonder if this comfort zone was made to be a crutch to hold us back from going forward or a stepping stone to understand the type of place we would want to live in and what we should strive to create around us.

Nonetheless,i believe our comfort zone is whatever/wherever we find peace in our minds. so my mission is to not only embrace my comfort zone, but 2 continue to expand this zone for the rest of the world that i love to live in and share as well. L.G.I.T.

RANDOM ARTIST ADVICE

DEAR HARD WORKING ARTISTS WHO LOVE GOOD MUSIC....N ALSO U COOKIE CUTTERS RUINING IT..LOL.....I think im beginning to understand...WACK MUSIC AND ARTISTS HAVE OUTNUMBERED US BYYYYY FAR!!!! BUT THAT WAS THE PURPOSE!!

EXAMPLES
--THE RADIO
--LACK OF CD SALES
-- LIL B SELLING OUT SHOWS
--PUFFY ENDORSING ANYTHING THAT SELLS(or has a buzz)..lol-----

-- GOT TALENT??--

ITS TRUE!!! BUT ITS NOT OVER FOR US....NOOO NOOOO...THIS IS THE START..

havent you ever felt like theres just too many simple minded people out here........well believe yourself cuz your right!!!

now in a business sense....its way easier to categorize/market dumb ass or negative music....than something that may not fit the day to day criteria......THATS WHERE THE SMARTNESS HAS TO KICK IN FOR GOOD MUSIC MAKERS

BOTTOM LINE

People still want great music, emotional music, inspiring music and just that good ol good music. To be honest, their dying to get it!!!! but we tend to miss the one thing that these wack artists continue to carry.......AN IMAGE..A BRAND..an ACTIVE following..if the music sucks...u would eventually have to sell something else....SO they create their image..they sell it..they market it..they merchandise it...as it spreads in a physical form...it begins to take a noticing to the people who are looking to be a part of the next thing.....example--skinny jeans, mohawks, bling,it cud really be anything, fuzzy slippers in public,u name it etc.... image and following are important!! and these wack artists that are on often have a theme to their bs brigade......SO MY GOOD MUSIC LOVERS.....i know you may not love this business perspective im bringing to you...BUT WE GOTTA DO IT. its important that we share/spread ourselves to people just as much as our music........and merchandise, image and marketing is how you do it.

STOP CHASING THE RADIO,STOP CHASING THE A&R OF BUBBLEGUM GANG RECORDS, STOP LOOKING FOR APPROVAL. FIND YOUR FANS. BE THEIR VOICE. SUPPORT THEM. AND GIVE THEM SOMETHING TO SUPPORT.u'll be surprised how much easier the road gets...once you got people driving with you....L.G.I.T.

RANDOM INSPIRATION

REALLY MAAIIINE!? I MEAN MAINE?..RUNNIN 4 LEGALIZATION

MY TAKE-
i commend this young woman for stepping up and trying to change the world by taking action. this drug war is bullshit and even worse its full of casualties. killing over cannabis just doesnt make sense to me...neither does jailtime. but thats another story. again. nice work miss russell...im proud to have the same last name as ya! HAPPY 420!!!

EVER WONDER WHERE 420 CAME FROM? LEARN N BURN SOMETHING!!

"It had nothing to do with a police code -- though the San Rafael part was dead on. Indeed, a group of five San Rafael High School friends known as the Waldos - by virtue of their chosen hang-out spot, a wall outside the school - coined the term in 1971. "

"Word of the ritual spread and expanded to a yearly event in various places.
Soon, marijuana aficionados were using “420” as a code
for smoking and using it as a sign-off on fliers for
concerts where the drug would be plentiful."

ONCE HIGH TIMES N PUBLICATIONS GOT WORD OF THE "HAZE PHRASE CRAZE"....IT WAS A WRAP...ACTUALLY A DOOBIE....SO ENJOY YOURS...REPRESENT FOR THE WALDOS ALL OVER THE WORLD..AND DONT LET A BADGE RUIN UR BAG...PEACE AND HAPPY 420!!!

You should be focused on making some of the most incredible music you can, release it regularly, and develop a kick-ass stage show. Everything else is built off of this foundation.
